Facebook is a huge phenomena in the world today and as such a significant tool for libraries to use to connect with its patrons. More organisations are using facebook as an advertising medium all of the time. It could be a great way for the library to receive feedback from patrons and disseminate information to them. What needs to be remembered however, is that a significant portion of patrons either don't have a facebook presence at all or don't keep up or maintain it. Facebook is therefore useful for connecting with only 1 sector of the library community. Where I believe it is of most use is in reaching out to the youth sector of the community who use facebook as an everyday tool of communication. This group can often be hard to connect with. However you have to get them to want to look.

Your last point is a good one. 'you have to get them to want to look'. How do libraries do this??? Competitions, quirky entries, postings that are in a language that suit their audience as you mentioned a lot of youth use Facebook to keep in contact with others so do you need to aim your entries towards them. Would you be better off having a youth themed facebook page???
