RSS Feeds

I think that RSS feeds are useful to the individual if they have an interest in particular sites on a regular basis. I believe it would be most useful for sites that don't put up feeds everyday. For sites with everyday feeds you would be just as well served with a favorites link. For big sites such as news papers it could be useful if you can break down the feed to only those areas of interest. Having a feed to the site would save time in sifting infomation or if you are looking for particular information such as job vacancies as soon as they arise. As far as libraries are concerned, they could be of use to particular interest groups such as bookclubs or for event notification. The library could put up notifications of new aquisitons or services to the library in various areas of interest. As a way of promoting the library it is dependant on people actually being interested enough to subscribe in the first place.

Hi! Right on the topic of the week, Wollongong City library has just posted its first images onto Flickr. This is the link to look at them.

Hi! I have uploaded some photos of my family, some straight onto the blog and some from my new Flickr account. It is fun learning how to use these sites and making them work for me.

For libraries I think Flickr could be a useful tool. It would be a good way to promote the libraries photographic collections. By posting some of the collections and tagging them the library would give patrons and other browsers a taste of what is available. Many libraries such as the NSW State library already do this. Flickr could also be useful as a event promotion tool by posting pictures taken at library sponsored events.

Hi! Time to write some more. This blog is mostly going to be about the library course I am currently undertaking and anything else I can think to say that I think other people might be remotely interested in.

Libraries and Blogs.

I think that one of the greatest challenges libraries are facing today is the exponential growth of new technology. Many younger people are not reading books as much as they used to, because of the time spent on computers, phones etc. gaming and social networking. For this reason libraries need to be proactive in catching this generations attention. One way to do this is for the library to become actively involved in using learning the full potential of technology and using it promote themselves and the facilities and services they offer.

Blogs can be an important tool towards this aim. Promoting and maintaining an active blog site could be useful as a feed back tool.
  • It gives a place for library users to air their opinions on what they want from their library.
  • They could make suggestions that the library could find useful in directing future planning.
  • It could allow people to complain without having to publicly confront someone in person. (less intimidating)
  • It could allow people to feel more involved in the running of their library and the library community.
  • It would give people that love books and libraries to commune and share their ideas.
